On 11th March 2016 Councillor Theresa Higgins, Mayor of Colchester, unveiled the Ruth King Close sign.
Ruth King Close was the very first street naming in which the Civic Society was involved after being accepted by Colchester Borough Council as consultees on street names for the urban part of the Borough. The Society is now being consulted by the Borough Council on the naming of Streets.
Miss Ruth King, was headmistress of the Colchester Girls High School for 25 years before it moved to the present site next door.
The ceremony was arranged with the help of the Colchester Girls High School Old Girls Association, the school itself and co-ordinated for the Civic Society by Henry Spyvee.
Liz White, Chairman of the Old Girls Association said that Miss King was strict and feared but also much respected and loved for her dedication to the school and her pupils.
After the ceremony, everyone was invited to Liz White’s home for coffee and cakes.
